Summary

Dream debut for Kalaria spurs Gujarat to victory

Mumbai, Feb 28: After restricting Saurashtra to 173 in a low-scoring match at the Wankhede Stadium, Gujarat coasted to a four-wicket victory in their last match of the Inter State One-Day league.

Earlier, Saurashtra were reeling at 14 for four after opting to bat first in their West Zone encounter against Gujarat. Debutant Rush Kalariya claimed three of the top four wickets knocking back Saurashtra in the sixth over. With Saurashtra on 14, the 19-year-old left-arm pacer first removed opener Sagar Jogiyani (13), while Ishwar Chaudhary picked Jaydev Shah for nought in the next over. Kalariya then followed up with the wickets of Sheldon Jackson and senior batsman Sitanshu Kotak; both departing without adding to the total.

Chirag Jani then joined Cheteshwar Pujara to rescue the Saurashtra innings with a 94-run partnership for the fifth wicket. But, a little after the team crossed the 100-run mark, Jani was trapped lbw by Akshar Patel for 41. With the partnership broken, the Gujarat bowlers struck at regular intervals to wrap-up the Saurashtra innings in 47.5 overs. Pujara top-scored for Saurashtra with 82 runs; striking three boundaries and three sixes during his 127-ball stay at the crease. Kalariya finished with four for 21 while Mehul Patel and Manish Parmar chipped in with two wickets apiece for Gujarat.

Chasing 174, Gujarat were cruising on 54 without loss until Nayan Doshi dismissed Avi Barot for 23. Kamlesh Makwana then followed up with a maiden over and sent back Samit Patel (0) while Doshi had Priyank Panchal (31) stumped for zero in his next over with the score still on 54. Next to walk back to the pavilion a few overs later was captain Niraj Patel (20) lbw off Makwana. But after the minor setback, Sunny Patel and Manprit Juneja built a 51-run stand to take their team closer to the target. With just 49 runs required from 20.4 overs, Juneja was caught and bowled by Doshi to depart for 26. Sunny Patel was however unfortunate to miss out on a half-century, departing after scoring a 68-ball 43. Akshar Patel (31* off 30) and Kalariya (15*) then finished off the game in style with a boundary.

Brief score: Saurashtra 173 all out in 47.5 overs (C Puajar 82, Chirag Jani 41, R Kalariya 4/21, M Patel 2/34, M Parmar 2/34) lost to Gujarat 176/6 in 39.4 overs (Sunny Patel 43, P Panchal 31, A Patel 31*, K Makwana 3/32, N Doshi 3/36 ) by four wickets
