Summary
Slightly nervous, the young fast bowler was inspired by Head Coach Anil Kumble’s address to the team
With Team India’s new Head Coach Anil Kumble assuming charge from Wednesday, the first day of the preparatory camp here at the National Cricket Academy, the buzz was naturally centered around one of Indian cricket’s greatest players. Coincidentally, his new stint started at his home ground adding to the excitement. For one more member of the Indian team, it was a moment to savour. While Kumble began a new innings, Mumbai’s Shardul Thakur took first steps towards realizing his dream. It was his first outing with the Indian Test team. Unusually reserved for a fast bowler, Shardul soaked in every moment in his own calm demeanor. “There is always a bit of nervousness when you are new to the setup. I was nervous before landing here, but once I talked to the guys, I settled down. When we fly to St. Kitts, I might be a bit nervous but at the same time, it gets the best out of me,” he told BCCI.TV The 24-year-old who made it to the Indian team on the back his impressive Ranji Trophy performances in the past two seasons (41 wickets in 2015-16 and 48 wickets in 2014-15) was delighted to be a part of the national team. “It feels great. I was really excited to come here and give my best. On the first day, we did few fitness tests and I am happy I did well.” The youngster’s day began with Kumble addressing the team, setting the tone for the rest of the day. “I must say he created an impact right in his first interaction itself. I am keen to work with him and learn a lot of things. He is a legend. He has loads of experience and it is going to be very useful to the team and me. I am looking forward to spending time with him on this tour.”
Another opportunity the young pacer from Palghar nourishes, is bowling to captain Virat Kohli, who is in blazing form. Before coming to Bengaluru, Shardul bowled in the indoor nets at Mumbai Cricket Association’s BKC facility and had a couple of running sessions. “Bowling to good batsmen in the nets is always an advantage as it shows you where you stand, what you need to work on and how you can improve. So, I am looking forward to bowling to Virat Kohli in the nets and test myself.”
