Simmons ready for the Ashwin challenge
Summary

WI batsman speaks on facing the Indian off-spinner

The West Indies top order batsman Lendl Simmons exuded confidence of continuing the run spree on Indian soil as the touring West Indian team prepares to face-off against India in the upcoming five-match ODI series. The batsman will be taking the confidence of having scored runs in India going into the series as will a few other West Indian players who have been participating in the Indian Premier League and the ongoing Champions League T20. Asked about the home advantage, Simmons said, “Of course there is home advantage (for India). There is crowd, there are good pitches that the Indian batsmen are very good on and accustomed to batting on. So there is a bit of home advantage in the sense that you have good spinners like (Ravichandran) Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja and some seam bowling as well so I think there is bit of home advantage.” Talking about negotiating India’s spin attack, he said: “I like batting against spinners. I like the challenge of batting against Ashwin and Jadeja so hopefully once I get a good start I can counter attack and come out at the top.” The 29-year old, who enjoys opening the batting has shown the ability to bat anywhere in the top and the middle-order. “I can adapt to different positions. Not everyone has that talent to bat from No 1 to No 6 position. God has given me that talent and that’s the way I bat. Wherever my team needs me I will be there to fill in that role. I have enjoyed opening and also to batting at No 5 for West Indies.” “I always like myself as an opening batsman. My mind is settled at opening. It’s when I have to bat lower down the order I have to prepare myself.” Asked if batting ahead of big hitters like Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard allowed him to play his natural game freely, he replied, “I just go out and play my natural game. I don’t put myself under any pressure. We have a good team and once we get a good start we know that Pollard and Bravo can always come good.”
