Smith eyes 2-0 at Durban
Summary

South African captain Graeme Smith says his team wants to keep the winning momentum going

Centurion, Dec 20:Elated at the all-round performance of his team in the first Test, South African captain Graeme Smith on Monday said that it was hard to single out one glittering performance from the many that studded the match.

The host-captain is eager to keep the winning momentum going when the two sides meet in Durban for the second Test starting December 26.

Excerpts from an interview.

On winning thanks to a clinical performance

Yeah, I am obviously very happy. It is a big series. We have had a massive build up going into this Test match. You know we had heard a lot about the Indian team and to perform well for all the five days and get a really good victory [is impressive].

On the disciplined performance put in by his side

Especially the second innings, I think. You know bowling in the first innings on this kind of wicket, which was a bit dampish, and to get the ball in the right areas was a bit of pressure, but the bowlers did very well.

In the second innings, it was good old Test cricket - having to bowl to a partnership, work hard throughout the day and in the fourth session Sachin [Tendulkar] and MS [Dhoni] played really well. It was a big, hot day and a very good wicket and the guys played really well.

On maintaining a good strike-rate

Yeah, we wanted to be positive. It is a naturally fast-scoring outfield and there was no [big] innings played and there was pressure. It is so difficult to single guys out but Jacques [Kallis] getting his first double hundred and Hash [Hashim Amla] were incredible. To take the game forward with such positive [intent] is exactly how we want to play our Test cricket.

On the upcoming Durban Test

Yeah, for us it is an important time of the year, you know. Good, family time. We want to enjoy the time we have with the guys and the family. There has been terrific support from the fans and this time of the year is incredible. Durban should be the same and hopefully we will go ahead and make it 2-0.
