Dravid goes past Gavaskar as captain Dhoni notches up 15 Test wins
Jamaica, June 23:Four days into the Kingston Test at Sabina Park, India could boast of winning the first Test of a series in the Caribbean for the first time ever. The 63-run win featured a trio of Test debuts for India, a solid Suresh Raina-Harbhajan Singh partnership, a classic Rahul Dravid century and other highlights. Take a look at the numbers that mattered from MS Dhoni’s 15th Test win as captain.
Day 1
· This was the 1997th match in Test cricket history.
· This was West Indies’ 471st and India’s 449th Test match.
· This was the 83rd Test match between these two sides – the 43rd in Caribbean and 11th at Kingston’s Sabina Park.
· Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar and Abhinav Mukund were making their respective Test debuts for India. A total of 270 players have now appeared for India in Test cricket.
· The last time three Indian players made their debut in a Test was against England at Mohali in December 2001, when Sanjay Bangar, Iqbal Siddiqui and Tinu Yohannan became the 240th, 241st and 242nd player respectively to represent India in Test cricket.
· The last time India fielded three debutants in an overseas Test was also against England at Birmingham in 1996 when Sunil Joshi, Paras Mhambrey, Venkatesh Prasad and Vikram Rathour made their respective Test debuts.
· Indiahas fielded three debutants in a Test against West Indies on two previous occasions (at Bombay Brabourne in 1958-59 and at Madras in 1987-88). However, India has handed debuts to two players in a Test in the Caribbean only once before. This was way back in 1970-71, also at Kingston, when Kenia Jayantilal and Pochiah Krishnamurthy made their debuts. So, three debuts in this Test is a new record for India in the Caribbean.
· MS Dhoni registered his fifth duck in Test cricket – his first against West Indies.
· The 146-run partnership between Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh was India’s second best for the seventh wicket against West Indies. Dilip Sardesai and Eknath Solkar had added 186 runs at Bridgetown in 1970-71.
· The above partnership was India’s second best for any wicket at Kingston after the 237-run partnership between Pankaj Roy and Vijay Manjrekar for the second wicket in 1952-53.
· The Suresh Raina-Harbhajan Singh partnership contributed 59.34% of India’s total. This was the sixth most dominant partnership for the seventh wicket in a completed innings in all Test cricket. Interestingly, Harbhajan appears in two of them.
· The Raina-Harbhajan partnership had 25 boundaries (24 fours and one six) and only 26 singles.
· All three debutants, Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar and Abhinav Mukund, started their respective Test careers with a four.
· The last time India were bundled out on the first day of a Test was in 2008 against Sri Lanka at Colombo PSS when they were dismissed for 249.
Day 2
· Praveen Kumar returned with figures of three for 38 on debut. He, however, blotted his copybook by getting banned from bowling for running on the pitch. Praveen, at that stage, was bowling his 18th over, when Daryl Harper signalled “third strike” and barred him from bowling again in the innings. It was the 51st over of the West Indies innings with the scoreboard reading 135 for five.
· Praveen thus achieved the dubious distinction of becoming the second Indian to be banned from bowling in a Test for running on the pitch. Ashish Nehra (v Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, 2001) was the first Indian bowler to suffer this fate. As it turns out, it was Daryl Harper who had banned the bowler on that occasion too.
· Indiamanaged a first innings lead of 73 runs after being bowled out for only 246. This provided only the seventh instance of India getting a first innings lead in an overseas Test despite getting bundled out for a total of 250 or less while batting first.
· VVS Laxman, playing his 200th Test innings, recorded his 13th duck - his third against West Indies.
Day 3
· Rahul Dravid’s hundred was his …
Ø third in the Caribbean
Ø fourth against West Indies
Ø 18th outside India
Ø 26th at No. 3
Ø 32nd in Test cricket
Ø 64th in first-class cricket
· Dravid has now equalled Australia’s Steve Waugh’s tally of 32 hundreds. Only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (40), Ricky Ponting (39), Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara (34 each) have scored more Test hundreds than Dravid.
· It was after five years and 37 innings that Dravid scored a hundred outside the sub-continent. Incidentally, his last such hundred had also come against West Indies – 146 at Gros Islet in 2006. Dravid aggregated 1,201 runs at an average of 36.39 with 10 fifties between these two hundreds outside the sub-continent.
· Rahul Dravid, on 52, completed his 1,500 runs against West Indies. He became the third Indian to do so after Sunil Gavaskar (2,749) and Dilip Vengsarkar (1,596). At the end of his innings, his tally stood at 1,560 from 18 Tests.
· Dravid now has a batting average of 67.82 against West Indies - the highest by an Indian batsman against West Indies. Sunil Gavaskar is second with an average of 65.45

· Dravid, on 105, achieved the distinction of aggregating the most runs by a visiting batsman in the Caribbean. He moved ahead of fellow countryman Sunil Gavaskar’s tally of 1,404 runs. At the end of his innings, Dravid had aggregated 1,412 runs at an average of 70.60 with three hundreds and 10 fifties.
· Dravid has now aggregated 9,769 runs at No. 3. Only Ricky Ponting – with 9,856 – is ahead of him at this position.
· Suresh Raina was Devendra Bishoo 100th victim in first-class cricket. Bishoo was playing his 24th match.
· Bishoo also returned his best figures in Test cricket (in his third match). His previous best was four for 68 against Pakistan at Providence on debut earlier this season.
Day 4
· India’s win by 63 runs gave them their 37th victory in 220 Tests played outside India. Interestingly, India won only 13 Tests (out of 155) played between 1932 and 1999. Since 2000, they have won 24 out of 65.

· Indiawon the first match of a series for the first time in 10 series played in the Caribbean. Their earliest win in the Caribbean was in the second Test of the series - on two occasions - in 1970-71 and 2001-02. In fact, India have beaten West Indies in the first Test of a home series on just two occasions (in nine series) - in 1994-95 and 2002-03.
· Incidentally, this was also the first time that India have beaten West Indies in two consecutive Tests in the Caribbean. India had defeated West Indies by 49 runs at this same venue in 2006, which was the last Test these two sides played against each other.
· CarltonBaugh – one of the two players whose birthdays fell during the Test - got out for a duck on his 29th birthday. Ramnaresh Sarwan, the other birthday boy, had recorded a duck a day before his 31st birthday.
· A total of 15 players have now suffered the ignominy of registering a duck in a Test against India during which their birthday fell. Three of them - Australia’s Ian Meckiff, Pakistan’s Waqar Younis and West Indies’ Carlton Baugh suffered the humiliation of getting a duck on their birthday itself.
· No side has ever chased down a victory target of 300 at Kingston’s Sabina Park. The highest successful fourth innings chase here is just 212 for three by West Indies against Sri Lanka in 2003.
· West Indies’ total of 262 runs is the fourth-highest chase by any side at Kingston’s Sabina Park. The details:

· Indiawon the match within four days - the 13th time they wrapped up a match outside the sub-continent in four days. This tally includes two matches won within three days (v Zimbabwe, Harare, 2005-06 & v West Indies, Kingston, 2006).
· Praveen Kumar returned match figures of six for 80 – third best by an Indian seamer in his debut Test after Munaf Patel’s seven for 97 (v England, Mohali, 2005-06) and Abid Ali’s seven for 116 (v Australia, Adelaide, 1967-68).
· Rahul Dravid won his 11th Man-of-the-Match award. He thus moved ahead of Anil Kumble (10). Now only Sachin Tendulkar (14) has won more such awards for India.
The last 12 consecutive Tests played at Kingston’s Sabina Park have all produced results with West Indies winning seven and losing five.
