Stats Highlights, Aus v Ind, 3rd Test, Day 1
Summary

Fearless Warner scores fastest Test century by an Australian

Perth, Jan 13: Day 1 of the Perth Test brought little respite for the beleaguered visitors. Dismissed for a paltry 161 runs after being put in to bat, they had to suffer a lightning century from opener David Warner, the quickest by an opener in Test cricket. Take a look at the numbers that matter from the opening day of the third Test between Australia and India.

  • R Vinay Kumar became the 274th player to represent India in Test cricket.

  • India went into the Test with four pacers – Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and R Vinay Kumar. The last time India had four pacers in their line-up was way back in 1991-‘92 when Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar, Javagal Srinath and Subroto Banerjee played against Australia at Sydney.

  • India’s 161 is their second-lowest total in seven innings at Perth after 141 in 1991-‘92.

  • Virender Sehwag recorded his 15th duck in Test cricket; 14 of these have come while opening the innings for India. He now shares the dubious distinction of recording the most ducks by an Indian opener with Pankaj Roy. Now only Mike Atherton and Marvan Atapattu are ahead of him on this count.

  • Virat Kohli (44) recorded his highest score in an away Test, bettering the 30 he made against West Indies at Roseau in July last year.

  • Ben Hilfenhaus has now taken his wicket-tally in the series to 19 – the highest for any bowler from either side. He has 25 wickets against India in five Tests.

  • The unbroken partnership of 149 runs between David Warner and Ed Cowan is Australia’s highest opening partnership against India at Perth bettering the paltry 27 between Wayne Phillips and Mark Taylor in 1991-‘92.

  • David Warner raced to his fifty off just 36 balls – the second fastest by an Australian batsman after Bruce Yardley’s 29-ball fifty against West Indies at Bridgetown in 1977-‘78.

  • Australia reached their 100 in just 14 overs. This is the third fastest team 100 on record in Test cricket.

  • Warner reached his hundred off just 69 balls – the fastest hundred by an Australian, the fastest against India and the joint fourth fastest in Test history. Only West Indies’ Viv Richards (56 balls against England at St. John's in 1985-‘86), Australia's Adam Gilchrist (57 balls against England at Perth in 2006-‘07), and Jack Gregory (67 balls against South Africa at Johannesburg in 1921-‘22) have scored faster hundreds in Test cricket. West Indies’ S Chanderpaul had also recorded a 69-ball hundred against Australia at Georgetown in 2002-‘03.

  • The previous fastest hundred against India was made by South Africa’s AB de Villiers – off 75 balls at Centurion in 2010-‘11.

  • The previous fastest hundred for Australia against India was made by Adam Gilchrist, who took 84 balls for his hundred at Mumbai in 2000-‘01.

  • Warner’s hundred is also the fastest by an opener in Test cricket, beating West Indies’ Chris Gayle’s 70-ball hundred against Australia, also at Perth, in 2009-‘10.

  • Warner also became the 21st Australian batsman (on the 32nd occasion) to score a hundred in one session. Incidentally, he is only the second to do so against India after Don Bradman, who had made 107 runs between tea and the close of first day’s play at Adelaide in 1947-‘48.
