Stats Highlights, Eng v Ind, 1st Test, Day 3
Summary

Centurion Dravid makes the Lord’s Honours Board

London, July 23: While all eyes were trained on the ominous-looking Tendulkar, hoping for his 100th international hundred, Rahul Dravid soldiered on to score another vital century, his 33rd in Tests. The batsman, who had narrowly missed a mention in the Lord’s honours board on debut 15 years ago, finally earned the well-deserved distinction. But for fans who had turned up at cricket’s most hallowed ground today, a glimpse of the two masters playing in tandem was a sight to cherish forever. Here’s the day’s story in numbers.

  • Sachin Tendulkar (34) once again failed to score a Test fifty at Lord’s. In his eight innings at Lord’s, Sachin has aggregated only 183 runs at an average of 22.87 with a highest of 37. There is only one ground where Sachin’s performance has been even worse. The details:

  • Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar became the most successful Indian pair against England in terms of runs added as a partnership. These two have now added 914 runs in 19 innings against England, which takes them ahead of the Indian record of 834 runs hitherto held by Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. Tendulkar and Ganguly did so in just nine innings, though.

  • When Rahul Dravid scored 50, he became the second highest run-scorer in Test cricket, surpassing Ricky Ponting's tally of 12,363 runs. Now only Sachin Tendulkar - with 14,726 runs - is ahead of Dravid in Test cricket. The following table lists the leading run-scorers in Test cricket:

+ Batsmen’s figures include their performance in the ICC Super Series Test

between Australia and the World XI in the 2005/06 season.

  • For the first time in more than 99 years, the top two run-scorers in Test cricket were playing together in the same team. The last time this happened was in 1911-12 at Sydney and the batsmen were Australians Clem Hill and Victor Trumper. Overall, this was only the sixth such instance in Test cricket. The details:

Dravid, on 85, completed his 1,000 Test runs in England. He became third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar (1336) and Sunil Gavaskar (1152) and 31st visiting batsman to do so.

Dravid needed 16 innings to complete his 1,000 runs in England. Among the visiting batsmen only Don Bradman (8), Viv Richards (10), Mark Taylor (14), Sachin Tendulkar (15) and Graeme Smith (15) have reached this mark in fewer innings than Dravid.

Dravid has now equalled Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar’s Indian record of scoring most (4) hundreds in England.

Only two Indians have scored a Test century at an older age than Dravid. The details:

When he caught Harbhajan off the bowling of Chris Tremlett, Matt Prior surpassed Geraint Jones’ tally of 133 dismissals. Now only Allan Knott (269), Alec Stewart (241), Godfrey Evans (219),Bob Taylor (174) and Jack Russell (165) are ahead of Prior for England.

Zaheer Khan recorded his 22nd duck in Test cricket. He is now just one short of equalling Bhagwat Chandresekhar’s dubious record of aggregating most ducks in a Test career for India.

Indian innings had four ducks as Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma failed to open their account. The last time Indian innings contained four ducks was against South Africa at Ahmedabad in April 2008. It was the sixth such instance against England. Incidentally India’s total (286) was their second highest in an innings where four batsmen recorded ducks. They had made 366 against Australia at Melbourne in 2003-04 with Tendulkar, Parthiv Patel, Ajit Agarkar and Ashish Nehra failing to open their account.
