Summary
Prior joins elite keeper-batsman club with unbeaten century
London, July 24: Ishant Sharma changed bowling ends – and lengths – to pick up four wickets in England’s second innings at injured pacer Zaheer Khan’s advice. But the hosts put up a brilliant resistance in the form of a fighting partnership between Matt Prior (103*) and Stuart Broad (74*) on Day 4 of the action-packed Test at Lord’s. A look at the day in numbers.
Matt Prior (103*) scored his sixth Test century in his 44th Test. This puts him at level with Alec Stewart among England wicketkeepers with most centuries. Only Les Ames – with eight centuries - is ahead of Prior.
Prior became only the third England keeper to score a century against India. The following table lists the highest scores by England keepers against India:
Keeper | Runs | Venue | Season | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Jack Russell | 124 | Lord's | 1996 | Drawn |
Godfrey Evans | 104 | Lord's | 1952 | Won |
Matt Prior | 103* | Lord's | 2011 | To Be Seen |
Dick Spooner | 92 | Kolkata | 1951-52 | Drawn |
Allan Knott | 90 | The Oval | 1971 | Los |
Prior now has a batting average of 45.40 – the highest by an England wicketkeeper having batted in at least 10 innings. He went ahead of Les Ames, who averaged 43.40.
Among all keepers who have played at least 10 innings in their career, Prior's average of 45.40 is the third highest. Only Andy Flower (53.70) and Adam Gilchrist (47.60) are ahead of Prior.

Prior became the third wicketkeeper to score a century and a fifty in the same Test against India. Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower has done so thrice. The details of keepers who’ve performed this feat against India in the past:
Keeper | Scores | Venue | Season | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Clyde Walcott (WI) | 54 & 108 | Kolkata | 1948-49 | Drawn |
Andy Flower (Zim) | 115 & 62* | Delhi | 1992-93 | Lost |
Andy Flower (Zim) | 183* & 70 | Delhi | 2000-01 | Lost |
Andy Flower (Zim) | 55 & 232* | Nagpur | 2000-01 | Drawn |
Matt Prior (Eng) | 71 & 103* | Lord's | 2011 | To be seen |
This was the second occasion where Prior scored a century and a fifty in the same Test. He had also made 131* and 61 against West Indies at Port-of-Spain in 2008-09. Prior is only the second wicketkeeper in Test annals (after Andy Flower) to perform this feat more than once. Flower did so on five occasions.
The seventh wicket unbroken partnership of 162 runs between Matt Prior and Stuart Broad is England’s best for this wicket against India – home or abroad. The pair obliterated the previous record stand of 125 between Derek Randall and Phil Edmonds, also at Lord’s, in 1982.
The above partnership is, in fact, England’s fifth highest for the seventh wicket against any country. The details:
Runs | Batsmen | Opponents | Venue | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
197 | Mike Smith & Jim Parks | v West Indies | Port-of-Spain | 1959-60 |
174 | Colin Cowdrey & Godfrey Evan | v West Indies | Lord's | 1957 |
169 | Paul Collingwood & Matt Prior | v West Indies | Chester-le-Street | 2007 |
167 | David Gower & Vic Marks | v Pakistan | Faisalabad | 1983-84 |
162* | Matt Prior & Stuart Broad | v India | Lord's | 2011 |
Interestingly Prior and Broad have now put on a century partnership on last three consecutive occasions when they have batted together!
MS Dhoni sent down two overs in England’s second innings. He had bowled 8 overs in first innings. Dhoni, in the process, became the first wicketkeeper in cricket history to bowl in both innings of a Test.
England declared both their innings - fifth time they did so against India. The details:
Scores | Venue | Season | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
500-8d & 184-5d | Mumbai BS | 1961-62 | Drawn |
328-9d & 213-3d | Manchester | 1974 | Won |
476-9d & 68-0d | Delhi | 1981-82 | Drawn |
653-4d & 272-4d | Lord's | 1990 | Won |
474-8d & 269-6d | Lord's | 2011 | To be seen |
Harbhajan Singh managed just one wicket in the match conceding 218 runs. This provided the 61st occasion when an Indian bowler conceded 200 runs in a match. Anil Kumble tops the chart with 16 such instances, followed by Harbhajan Singh (6), Vinoo Mankad and Manoj Prabhakar (4 each). However, this was only the seventh time that an Indian bowler conceded over 200 runs while picking up just one wicket in the match.
Rahul Dravid now holds the record for scoring more runs than any other batsman in the fourth innings of a Test match. At the end of the fourth day’s play, Dravid has aggregated 1468 runs in the fourth innings at an average of 44.48. This takes him ahead of West Indies’ Brian Lara’s record tally of 1,440 runs.
