Stats Highlights, Eng v Ind, 4th Test, Day 2
Summary

Bell, Pietersen each cross 150-mark; share record 350-run stand

London, August 19: After a fitful start to the fourth and final Test between England and India due to rain, it was business as usual on Day 2. England, resuming from an overnight score of 75 for no loss, amassed runs against the hapless Indian bowlers at will. Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen kept the crowd, including the British PM, entertained with a partnership of brilliance. Their 350-run stand dismantled not just the bowling attack but also several previous records. Take a look at the numbers that matter from another glorious day for England.

  • The 350-run partnership between Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen set a plethora of records. Take a look:

  • On 170, it became the highest third-wicket partnership for England against India at The Oval, beating the 169-run stand between R Subba Row and MJK Smith in 1959.

  • On 267, it became the highest partnership for any wicket for England against India at The Oval, beating the 266-run stand between Wally Hammond and TS Worthington for the fourth wicket in 1936.

  • On 300, it became the eighth triple-century stand against India for any wicket – the second for England overall .

  • On 309, it became the highest partnership for England against India for any wicket, beating the 308-run partnership between Graham Gooch and Allan Lamb at Lord’s in 1990.

  • On 350, it was the second-highest third-wicket partnership for England in Tests.

  • This was the tenth century partnership for England in the series. India have managed just one.

  • Ian Bell (181*) made his 16th Test century, his second 150-plus score of the series. He had made 159 in the second innings of the Nottingham Test.

  • Bell has now scored centuries at eight different grounds in England (including Cardiff). Of the nine Test grounds currently used by England, he is still to score a century at Edgbaston.

  • The century was Bell’s fifth in 2011 – the most by any batsman.

  • Bell averages 128.00 in Tests in 2011. Among all players who have played at least 10 innings in a calendar year, only three batsmen have averaged more than Bell.

  • Kevin Pietersen (175) scored his 19th Test century – his second 150-plus score of the series. He had made an unbeaten 202 in the first innings of the Lord’s Test.

  • This was Pietersen’s fifth century against India, which puts him at level with Ian Botham and Graham Gooch in terms of scoring most centuries for England against India.

  • Pietersen now has eight scores of 150-plus in Tests. Among the England batsmen, only Wally Hammond (10) and Len Hutton (10) have more 150-plus scores to their name. Dennis Amiss, Graham Gooch and David Gower have also made eight 150-plus scores in Test cricket.

  • Pietersen’s century was the 100th for England against India - the most India have conceded against an opponent. West Indies batsmen have scored 98 centuries against India.

  • The last time two batsmen made 150 runs each on the same day – like Bell and Pietersen – was when Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie scored 223 and 169 respectively against Bangladesh on the opening day of the Chittagong Test. This was the first such instance against India.
