England surmount Tendulkar-Mishra challenge to win series 4-0
London, Aug 22: Day 5 of the fourth Testconfirmed the worst fears of Indian fans who’d been following the revealing series; that England would make a clean sweep against the floundering visitors. Right up to the penultimate day of the final match, Rahul Dravid had been synonymous with resistance for India; but the fag end of the series revealed another trooper, standing up for his side resolutely. Nightwatchman Amit Mishra scored a career-best 84, more than holding his own while batting with Sachin Tendulkar (91). The late partnership infused some life in the visitors’ all but dead campaign. But England ensured they would end the series with an unblemished record, completeing their second consecutive win by an innings margin. Take a look at England’s domineering performance reflected in the stats highlights of the last day of the Test series.
Amit Mishra (84) made his highest score in Test cricket which came as a nightwatchman. Interestingly, his previous highest of 50 (against Bangladesh at Chittagong) had also come as a nightwatchman.
Sachin Tendulkar (91) was dismissed in the 90s for the ninth time. With this he equalled Michael Slater and Rahul Dravid’s world record of most dismissals in the 90s.
Suresh Raina provided the 50th instance of an Indian batsman bagging a pair in a Test. It may be recalled that Virender Sehwag had also bagged a pair in the third Test at Edgbaston. There are many instances of two Indian batsmen bagging a pair in the same series, but it was the first that two top-order batsmen suffered this fate in the same series.
Raina’s pair spanned 42 balls – 29 balls in the first innings and 13 balls in the second. This is the longest pair by an Indian batsman in terms of balls faced. Mohinder Amarnath had batted for 28 balls for his pair against West Indies at Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1983-84.
Graeme Swann (six for 106) took his first five-wicket haul against India in his sixth Test.
Mishrawas Swann’s 150th wicket in Test cricket. He became the fifth England spinner after Derek Underwood (297), Jim Laker (193), Tony Lock (174) and Fred Titmus (153) to reach this landmark.
Catching RP Singh off the bowling of Stuart Broad, Matt Prior completed 150 dismissals in Test cricket. He became the sixth England keeper to reach this mark after Allan Knott (269), Alec Stewart (241), Godfrey Evans (219), Bob Taylor (174) and Jack Russell (165).
The defeat was India’s 39th by an innings margin – their 11th such defeat against England.
India had also lost the third Test at Edgbaston by an innings and 242 runs. The last time India lost two consecutive Tests by an innings margin was in 1975-76. That year, India lost to New Zealand in the third Test at Wellington by an innings and 33 runs and then to West Indies in the first Test at Bridgetown by an innings and 97 runs.
Incidentally, the last time that India lost two consecutive Tests in the same series by an innings margin was also against England in England in 1974.
India suffered a series whitewash, in a series comprising three matches or more, for the seventh time.
The details:
Clean-sweeps against India

5-0 v England in England in 1959
5-0 v West Indies in West Indies in 1961-62
3-0 v England in England in 1967

3-0 v England in England in 1974
3-0 v Australia in Australia in 1999-00
4-0 v England in England in 2011
This was also only the fourth occasion when a side registered a cleansweep in a series comprising of four Tests. The other such instances were: Australia beating India in 1967-68 (in Australia), South Africa beating Australia in 1969-70 (in South Africa) and England beating West Indies in 2004 (in England).
England registered their sixth consecutive series win. They have now played nine series in a row without losing a single one against seven countries. The nine series, spanning the last two years, have comprised 31 Tests of which they have won 20, drawn seven and lost only four. England’s last series defeat was against West Indies (0-1) in the Caribbean in March 2009.
Incidentally, England’s longest unbeaten streak is 14 series - between 1951 and 1958. On the other hand, the defeat ended India's longest ever winning streak of 11 series without defeat.
