Stats Highlights, Ind v NZ, 1st Test, Day 4
Summary

Ashwin gets his 43rd, while Martin gets his 35th

Hyderabad, August 26: After asking New Zealand to follow-on, the Indian spinners picked up where they had left off in the first innings. Led by R Ashwin, the hosts’ bowling attack was on the mark on the Hyderabad track, rendering the Kiwi batsmen clueless. Ashwin repeated his first innings heroics by registering another six-wicket haul.

In the process, the tall spinner went past a few interesting milestones, including clocking the best figures by an Indian bowler against New Zealand. While most records in this Test were broken by Ashwin and his teammates, there were a few dubious ones on which even the visitors managed to etch their names. Here are these and many more interesting statistics from the first Test:

  • The victory by an innings and 115 runs is India’s second-biggest against New Zealand after the innings and 198-run win at Nagpur in 2000-01. It was India’s fourth win against New Zealand by an innings margin, and 23rd such win at home and 31st overall.

  • R Ashwin’s figures of 12 for 85 are the best ever by an Indian bowler against New Zealand, beating S.Venkataraghavan’s 12 for 152 at Delhi in 1964-65.

  • Last time an Indian spinner took 10 wickets in a match in India was in 2005 when Harbhajan Singh took 10 for 141 v Sri Lanka at Ahmedabad

  • Ashwin’s figures are, in fact, the best by any spinner against New Zealand. England’s Derek Underwood held the previous record with figures of 12 for 97 at Christchurch in 1970-71.

  • Ashwin needed 21.66 balls per wicket on an average. Among all Indian spinners taking 10 wickets in a Test, only Narendra Hirwani had a better strike-rate (12.68) while picking up 16 for 136 against West Indies at Chennai in 1987-88.

  • Ashwin’s figures are the eighth best by an Indian spinner in Test cricket.

  • Ashwin now holds the Indian record for conceding the fewest runs while picking up a 10-wicket match haul. Irfan Pathan held the previous record with figures of 11 for 96 against Bangladesh at Dhaka in 2004-05.

  • Ashwin has now taken 43 wickets in seven Tests. His tally is the highest by any Indian bowler after his first seven Tests. Narendra Hirwani held the previous record with 42 wickets.

  • Chris Martin became the seventh New Zealand player to bag a pair (ducks in both innings) against India. He joins the ranks of Chris Kuggeleijn, AR MacGibbon, Tim MacIntosh, Martin Snedden, Gary Troup and Paul Wiseman. Wiseman suffered this fate twice.

  • This was seventh time Martin got a pair in a Test. His seven pairs have come against five countries – two each against Australia and Pakistan; and one each against South Africa, West Indies and India.

  • Martin’s seven pairs are easily the most by any player in Test history. Five other players – Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Courtney Walsh, Marvan Atapattu, Mervyn Dillon and Muttiah Muralitharan – have recorded four pairs each.

  • Martin has now extended his tally of ducks in Test cricket to 35 – as many as Australia’s Glenn McGrath. Now only Courtney Walsh – with 43 ducks – is ahead of Martin.

  • Zaheer Khan went wicketless in a Test for the first time since the Delhi Test against Australia in 2008-09.

  • MS Dhoni has now won 13 Tests out of the 19 he has captained on Indian soil. With this win, he has equalled Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of most Test wins on home soil.
