Stats Highlights: India v England, 1st ODI
Summary

Tredwell gets second four-for on Indian soil; England win in India after 14 tries

The first ODI between India and England saw a batting fest. Batsmen from both teams tallied a total of 641 runs, while most bowlers who rolled their arms today had a largely forgettable day at the office. However, James Tredwell stood out with his match figures of 4/44. The England spinner thereby claimed his second four-wicket haul in India, and thus became only the fifth visiting spinner to achieve this feat.

Thanks to this spectacular bowling performance, India were left nine runs in the red at the end of the match. As a result, England had finally won an ODI on Indian soil after a long gap of 14 games; the last time they had won in India was way back in 2006. Here are these and many more stats highlights from this exciting game:

Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot became the 181st ground to host a one-day international.

Before this match, Rajkot had hosted 12 ODIs at Madhav Rao Scindia Cricket Ground. Rajkot thus became the ninth Indian city (and 25th in the world) to have more than one ODI ground. Other Indian cities with more than one grounds are Ahmedabad, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Vadodara and Visakhapatnam.

Incidentally, India have the highest number of ODI grounds – 41. England are distant second with 22, followed by Australia (17), Pakistan (16) and West Indies (15).

Joe Root was making his ODI debut. He became 227th player to represent England in ODIs.

The 158-run partnership between Alastair Cook and Ian Bell is England’s best for the first wicket against India. The pair obliterated the 133-run stand between Barry Wood and Chris Tavare at Leeds in 1982. Incidentally, England’s previous highest opening stand against India in India was 129 between Craig Kieswetter and Alastair Cook at Kolkata in 2011.

England’s total of 325/4 is their second highest against India in India after 338/8 at Bengaluru in 2011.

England made 93 runs in their last 10 overs, 64 in last five and 38 in last two.

Samit Patel’s strike-rate of 220.00 (44* off 20 balls) is the highest for an England batsman against India in an innings of 20 balls or more. Jonny Bairstow held the previous record with a strike-rate of 195.24 (41* off 21 balls) at Cardiff in 2011.

Ishant Sharma’s figures of 10-2-86-0 are the joint third most expensive by an Indian bowler in an ODI. Interestingly, he conceded 21 runs in his first spell of 4 overs, 26 runs in three overs in the second spell and 39 runs in three overs in the third spell.

The Rahane-Gambhir partnership of 96 runs was the first 50-plus partnership by an Indian opening pair in 12 innings.

Yuvraj Singh (61) scored his 50th fifty in ODIs (apart from 13 hundreds). He became the fifth Indian to do so, after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin.

MS Dhoni took his tally of sixes in ODIs to 150. He became the eighth batsman to hit 150 sixes in ODIs, after Shahid Afridi (298), Sanath Jayasuriya (270), Sachin Tendulkar (195), Chris Gayle (193), Sourav Ganguly (190), Ricky Ponting (162) and Chris Cairns (153).

This was England's first win over India in India in 14 games. They had last beaten India in India on 12-04-2006 at Jamshedpur.

The defeat was India’s first against England in India under MS Dhoni. In 11 previous games a Dhoni-led Indian side had beaten England 10 times, while one match ended in a tie.

James Tredwell (4/44) took his second four-wicket haul in as many games on Indian soil. He had also taken 4/48 against West Indies at Chennai in 2011 World Cup in his only other game on Indian soil.

Tredwell became only the fifth visiting spinner to take two four-wicket hauls in India, after Paul Strang, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan and Imran Tahir.

India (316/9) made a total of 300-plus in a chase for the 19th time – most such totals by any side. Sri Lanka are second with 11 such instances.

The match aggregate of 641 for the loss of 13 wickets is the third highest in ODIs without an individual ton. In the South Africa-Australia match in 2002 at Port Elizabeth, 656 runs were scored with no player reaching the three-figure mark. The India-England match at Bristol in 2007 saw 649 runs being scored without a single century.
