Ishant bags ten; Laxman misses out on another ton
Barbados, July 2: Ten wickets by a bowler, a bold declaration by a captain and some stubborn resistance from the batsmen were the highlights of Day 5 of a closely-fought match. But in the end, it was the inevitable rain and bad light that had the final word in a game that was held to ransom by inclement weather throughout the five days. While India would be disappointed with the draw, the hosts would be relieved at holding on resolutely and avoiding a second consecutive loss. Here’s a look at the numbers that matter from the final day from the Bridgetown Test.
VVS Laxman, dismissed on 87, missed out on another well deserved hundred (he had scored 85 in the first innings). In the process, he became only the fourth Indian batsman to cross 80 in both innings of a Test without scoring a hundred. The complete list:
Scores | Batsman | Opponents | Venue | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
80 & 87 | Rusi Modi | v West Indies | Kolkata | 1948-49 |
91 & 80 | Mohinder Amarnath | v West Indies | Bridgetown | 1982-83 |
93 & 85 | Rahul Dravid | v Sri Lanka | Mumbai WS | 1997-98 |
85 & 87 | VVS Laxman | v West Indies | Bridgetown | 2011 |
Fidel Edwards (five for 76) earned his ninth five-wicket haul in Tests – his first against India. His previous best figures against India were four for 56 at Kingston in the first Test.
Dhoni’s declaration, setting West Indies a target of 280 runs, was the lowest fourth innings target ever set by India with at least two sessions of play left in the game. Nawab Pataudi Jr. had set England a target of 293 at Madras (Corporation Stadium) in 1963-64.
On the three previous occasions when Dhoni had made a declaration in the third innings, he had set the opposition targets of 516 (v Australia, Mohali, 2008-09), 403 (v England, Mohali, 2008-09) and 617 (v New Zealand, Wellington, 2008-09) respectively.
The wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul was Harbhajan’s 50th against West Indies. He became the fifth Indian after Kapil Dev (89), Anil Kumble (74), S Venkataraghavan (68) and Bishan Singh Bedi (62) to take 50 wickets against West Indies.
Chanderpaul batted for 113 minutes and faced 87 balls for his 12 runs at a strike-rate of 13.79. There have been only three innings in his entire career where Chanderpaul had a worse strike-rate having faced 50 or more balls. The details:
SR | Runs (Balls) | Opponents | Venue | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
10.34 | 6 (58) | v South Africa | Cape Town | 1998-99 |
11.76 | 6 (51) | v England | Port-of-Spain | 2008-09 |
13.79 | 12 (87) | v India | Bridgetown | 2011 |
14.00 | 7 (50) | v South Africa | Kingston | 2000-01 |
17.82 | 18 (101) | v England | Nottingham | 1995 |
Ishant Sharma (ten for 108) picked up his first ten-for in Test cricket. His previous best figures in a match were seven for 58 against New Zealand at Nagpur in 2010-11.
Ishant became only the seventh Indian pace bowler to claim a 10-wicket haul in a Test after Kapil Dev, Irfan Pathan (twice each), Chetan Sharma, Venkatesh Prasad, Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan.
Ishant’s figures are the best by an Indian bowler in the Caribbean, beating Kapil Dev’s eight for 118 at Kingston in 1982-83.
Ishant’s figures are the fifth best by an Indian bowler outside the subcontinent (second best by an Indian pacer).
Figures | Bowler | Oppn | Venue | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
12-104 | Bhagwat Chandrasekhar | v Australia | Melbourne | 1977-78 |
12-126 | Irfan Pathan | v Zimbabwe | Harare | 2005 |
12-279 | Anil Kumble | v Australia | Sydney | 2003-04 |
11-140 | Erapally Prasanna | v New Zealand | Auckland | 1975-76 |
10-108 | Ishant Sharma | v West Indies | Bridgetown | 2011 |
10-153 | Venkatesh Prasad | v South Africa | Durban | 1996-97 |
10-188 | Chetan Sharma | v England | Birmingham | 1986 |
10-194 | Bishan Singh Bedi | v Australia | Perth | 1977-78 |
At 22 years 303 days, Ishant became the fourth youngest Indian pacer to claim ten wickets in a match. Only Irfan Pathan, Chetan Sharma and Kapil Dev have done so at a younger age for India.
Ishant has now taken 16 wickets in two matches of this series – his best performance in a Test series. He had taken 15 wickets in a four-match series against Australia at home in 2008-09.
This was only the second drawn Test involving India at Bridgetown out of the nine Tests. India have lost the remaining seven.
