Ishant two wickets closer to new Indian record
Dominica, July 6: With one more Test to go before the 2000 mark is reached, the inevitable rain dominated proceedings in Dominica’s first ever Test. As India captain MS Dhoni elected to bowl, a decision he’s only taken twice before, Ishant Sharma extended his tally of wickets in the series to 18, cantering towards Irfan Pathan’s Indian record of 21. Here’s a look at how the rain-marred day played out, numerically.
This Test match was the 1999th in cricket history.
Windsor Park in Roseau (Dominica) became the 12th Caribbean ground and 106th ground overall to host a Test match. Here is a country-wise break-up of Test grounds:
Country | Grounds | Tests |
|---|---|---|
Australia | 9 | 377 |
England | 10 | 468 |
South Africa | 11 | 193 |
West Indies | 12 | 216 |
New Zealand | 7 | 179 |
India | 21 | 229 |
Pakistan | 17 | 151 |
Sri Lanka | 8 | 102 |
Zimbabwe | 3 | 44 |

Total | 106+ | 1999 |
+ Dhaka (formerly Dacca) was used for Test cricket by two countries – Pakistan and Bangladesh
Shivnarine Chanderpaul, playing his 133rd Test, became the most capped player for West Indies, surpassing Courtney Walsh’s tally of 132 Tests.
Kirk Edwards and Kieran Powell became the 291st and 292nd player respectively to appear for West Indies in Test cricket.
Munaf Patel was playing his first Test in more than two years. He had last played a Test in April 2009 against New Zealand at Wellington.
West Indies batted first for the first time in the series.
MS Dhoni provided the ninth occasion of an Indian captain putting West Indies in to bat after winning the toss. Others to do so are: Ajit Wadekar (1971), Nawab Pataudi, Jr. (1974), Bishan Singh Bedi (1976), Kapil Dev (1983), Dilip Vengsarkar (twice in 1989), Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and Sourav Ganguly (2002). Incidentally, India drew three and lost five games on the previous eight occasions.
Seven out of nine occasions where an Indian captain put West Indies in to bat after winning the toss have come in the Caribbean, with India drawing three and losing three on the previous six occasions.
This was the third instance where MS Dhoni opted to field first after winning the toss. The other two occasions were: v New Zealand at Hamilton in March 2009 (India won by 10 wickets) and v South Africa at Cape Town in January 2011 (match drawn)
Ishant Sharma extended his tally of wickets in the series to 18, which equals the best performance by an Indian pace bowler in a series in the Caribbean. Kapil Dev had also taken 18 wickets in 1988-89 in a four-match series.
Ishant has the chance to break the Indian record for most wickets in a three-match series by a pacer. Irfan Pathan currently holds this record. Pathan took 21 wickets against Zimbabwe in 2005, which was a two-match series. Incidentally, the best effort by an Indian pacer in a three-match series is 18 wickets, shared by five bowlers (including Ishant).
Ishant’s 16 wickets in the first two Tests of the series is the third-best effort by any pacer in his first two Tests against West Indies. Only Australia’s Alan Davidson (19) and New Zealand’s Chris Cairns (17) had taken more wickets than Ishant in their first two Tests against West Indies.
