Stats Highlights, WI v Ind - 3rd Test, Day 2
Summary

400 for Bhajji; another five-for for Ishant

Dominica, July 7: The Indian bowlers are in the thick of things in the rainy Caribbean. Even as Ishant Sharma moves closer to a record performance for any bowler in a three-match series in the West Indies, the redoubtable Harbhajan Singh joins the party with his 400th wicket. While Ishant’s five-for and Bhajji’s feisty bowling dominated proceedings, Darren Bravo and Carlton Baugh scored vital half-centuries for the hosts. Take a look at the numbers that matter from a massively reduced day’s play. On his 30th birthday, MS Dhoni achieved a unique distinction. When he caught Chanderpaul off the bowling of Ishant Sharma, Dhoni became the first wicketkeeper to effect 100 dismissals while also captaining the side. At the end of the West Indies innings, Dhoni’s tally stood at 101 in 27 Tests. Here is a list of leading captain-keepers in Test cricket.

  • Harbhajan Singh became the 11th bowler in Test cricket, and only the third Indian bowler, to have taken 400 wickets when he bowled Carlton Baugh. He is also the fourth spinner and only the second off-spinner after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800) to reach the 400-wicket mark.

  • Darren Bravo (50) made his sixth fifty in his eighth Test, while Carlton Baugh (60) made his third fifty in his 13th Test.

  • Ishant’s five for 77 was his second five-for in the series after his career best six for 55 at Bridgetown. The last time an Indian pacer took two five-wicket hauls in a series was way back in 2005 when Irfan Pathan did so against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe.

  • Ishant Sharma has now taken 21 wickets in the series – the most by an Indian pacer in a series in the Caribbean. Kapil Dev had taken 18 wickets in 1988-89 in a four-match series.

  • Ishant now needs two wickets to equal Pakistan’s Imran Khan’s record of most wickets in a three-match series in the Caribbean. Imran had taken 23 wickets in such a series in 1987-88.

  • Ishant has now equalled Irfan Pathan’s record for most wickets by an Indian pacer in a series of three matches or less. Pathan had taken 21 wickets against Zimbabwe in 2005, which was a two-match series. Incidentally, the best effort by an Indian pacer in a three-match series was 18 wickets shared by four bowlers (Javagal Srinath v South Africa in 1996-97,Irfan Pathan v Bangladesh in 2004-05, S Sreesanth v South Africa in 2006-07 and Zaheer Khan v England in 2007)

  • Ishant’s 21 wickets are also the maximum taken by an Indian bowler in his first three Tests against West Indies. Venkatapathy Raju held the previous record with 20 wickets, followed by Narendra Hirwani (19).

  • 49.2 overs of play were possible on Day 2. It may be recalled that only 31.1 overs could be bowled on Day 1.
