Summary
Dhoni scores unbeaten 50; India cross 300-mark
Dominica, July 8: With rain finally making way for a complete day’s cricket, India were the team that stood tall at stumps with a gritty performance from the batsmen. Captain MS Dhoni, due for a big innings, played resolutely for an unbeaten 65 while VVS Laxman, earning another half-century, became the highest run-scorer of the series. The day that leaked runs to the Indians also witnessed the unlikely dismissal of Laxman to a cricketer who had last rolled his arm in 2007, Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Take a look at how the sunny day in Dominica played out in numbers.
Murali Vijay suffered yet another failure. His scores in the series read 8,0,11,3 & 5.
Rahul Dravid, batting at No. 4, completed 7,000 runs in away Tests. He became only the second batsman in Test cricket to do so after fellow Indian Sachin Tendulkar (8,145).
Dravid’s tally includes 1,477 runs in 17 Tests in West Indies (avg 64.21), 972 in 12 Tests in Australia (avg 48.60), 915 in 9 Tests in England (avg 65.35), 766 in 7 Tests in New Zealand (avg 63.83), 662 in 12 Tests in Sri Lanka (avg 33.10), 624 in 11 Tests in South Africa (avg 29.71), 560 in 7 Tests in Bangladesh (avg 70.00), 550 in 6 Tests in Pakistan (avg 78.57) and 475 in 5 Tests in Zimbabwe (avg 79.16).The following table gives details of leading run-scorers in away Tests:

Abhinav Mukund (65) made his maiden fifty in his third Test, beating his 48 in the second innings of the Bridgetown Test.
MS Dhoni, on 52, completed 3,000 runs in Test cricket. He became the first Indian and tenth wicketkeeper in Test history to do so.
By taking 87 innings to reach this landmark, Dhoni also became the fourth quickest to reach the 3,000 run mark after Adam Gilchrist (63 innings), Andy Flower and Kumar Sangakkara (78 each).
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was bowling in a Test match after a gap of more than four years. He last rolled his arm over against England at Manchester in June 2007, bowling 11 overs and conceding 43 runs without any success.
VVS Laxman became Chanderpaul’s ninth victim in Test cricket and first since November 2002. Interestingly, the last wicket Chanderpaul got (prior to Laxman’s dismissal) was also of an Indian batsman (Javagal Srinath caught by Carl Hooper in India’s second innings of the Kolkata Test).
Laxman also became the leading run-scorer in the series – 240 runs in five innings at an average of 48. Suresh Raina is second with 224 runs.
Kirk Edrwads bowled four overs without any success. Interestingly, he had never bowled before in his previous 26 first-class games.
Four batsmen scored fifties in the Indian innings – Mukund (62), Laxman (56), Raina (50) and Dhoni (65*). This equalled the record for most fifties in an Indian innings in the Caribbean. Other such occasions were at Kingston in 1961-62, St.John’s in 1982-83 and 2001-02, and Basseterre in 2006.
The 103-run partnership between MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina for the sixth wicket was only the third century partnership in this series. All three came from India and all three involved Raina. The other two were: 146 runs for the seventh wicket between Raina and Harbhajan at Kingston and 117 for the fifth wicket between Laxman and Raina at Bridgetown.
MS Dhoni (65*) made his first fifty in the series. His scores in his previous four innings were: 0, 16, 2 & 5.
This was just Dhoni’s second fifty in 12 innings against West Indies after his 69 at St. John’s in 2006.
A total of 300 was achieved for the first time this series. The previous highest total in this series was 269 for 6 (decl) by India in the second innings of the Bridgetown Test.
