Chanderpaul-Edwards star in match-saving partnership
Dominica, July 10: While rain was the force of nature that dominated proceeding at the start of the third and final Test in Roseau, Dominica, it was the equally obstinate Shivnarine Chanderpaul who had the final word. India’s nemesis scored a gritty century – his 23rd in Tests – to all but take West Indies to the safety of a draw. Fidel Edwards ably assisted Chanderpaul with a career best, long-drawn innings of 30 that thwarted India’s victory plans. With the drawn result, MS Dhoni, however, can return home adequately pleased at extending his record for not having lost a Test series in his career as captain. Here are the numbers that matter from the final day of the last Test between West Indies and India.
· Shivnarine Chanderpaul (116*) scored his 23rd hundred in Test cricket in his 133rd Test.
· The hundred was Chanderpaul’s 16th in 66 Tests at home. Only Brian Lara (17) has scored more hundreds at home for West Indies.
· This was Chanderpaul’s sixth hundred in 21 Tests against India. Incidentally, India have been Chanderpaul’s favourite opponents. He has now aggregated 1,822 runs against India at an average of 67.48 – both these figures are his best against an opponent and so is his count of hundreds against India.
· Chanderpaul did not score a single boundary on the final day despite playing 142 balls. All of his five boundaries came in the third session yesterday.
· Chanderpaul has now aggregated 1,547 runs against India in the Caribbean – the most by any batsman in the India-West Indies rivalry. He took the record from Rahul Dravid who has a tally of 1,511 runs against West Indies in the Caribbean.
· Fidel Edwards (30) made his highest score in Test cricket. His previous best was 21 against South Africa at Cape Town in 2007-08. This was also the first time Edwards faced 100 balls in an innings. His previous best effort was of 86 balls (while scoring 20) against New Zealand at Napier in 2008-09.
· The ninth-wicket partnership between Chanderpaul and Edwards proved to be crucial. Although only 65 runs were added by the partnership, more importantly, it consumed 37 overs (225 balls to be precise). Remarkably, Chanderpaul did not take most of the strike. Edwards, in fact, faced 47% of the deliveries the partnership consumed.
· The following is a list of the longest partnerships (in terms of overs) for the 8th / 9th / 10th wickets against India since 2000:
Wkt | Overs | Runs | Venue | Season | |
Steve Waugh & Jason Gillespie (Aus) | 9th | 44.4 | 133 | Kolkata | 2000-01 |
Misbah-ul-Haq & Moh’d Sami (Pak) | 9th | 41.4 | 87 | Delhi | 2007-08 |
Andy Flower & Henry Olonga (Zim) | 10th | 39.1 | 97* | Delhi | 2000-01 |
T Samaraweera & A Mendis (SL) | 9th | 38.4 | 118 | ColomboPSS | 2010 |
S Chanderpaul& Fidel Edwards (WI) | 9th | 37 | 65 | Roseau | 2011 |
Simon Katich & Jason Gillespie (Aus) | 8th | 32 | 117 | Sydney | 2003-04 |
· West Indies’ total of 322 was their highest in the series, bettering 262 in the second innings of the Kingston Test.
· Murali Vijay (45) made his highest score in the series after recording scores of 8,0,11, 3 & 5 in his five previous innings.
· Only 31.02% of the teams’ runs came in the boundaries in the Test. There have been only two Tests since 2000 which had a lower boundary percentage – Pakistan v England Test at Lahore in 2000-01 (boundary percentage – 27.97) & Australia v England Test at Melbourne in 2006-07 (boundary percentage – 30.04).
· The drawn Test gave India their third series win against West Indies in West Indies. They had beaten West Indies by an identical margin in 1970-71 and 2006.
· The drawn Test also means India still haven’t won more than two Tests of a series outside the subcontinent since 2005 (when they beat Zimbabwe 2-0).
· MS Dhoni has not lost a single Test series ever since he took over India’s captaincy.
· At the end of the Test series:
o India’s Test record: Played – 451, Won-110, Lost-139, Tied-1, Drawn - 201
o West Indies’ Test record: Played – 473, Won- 153, Lost – 156, Tied – 1, Drawn – 163
o India-West Indies Test record: Played – 85, India- 12, West Indies – 30, Drawn - 43
o Dhoni’s captaincy record: Played – 27, Won – 15, Lost – 3, Drawn - 9
