This is a great phase for Indian cricket: KL Rahul
Summary

Opening batsman says that team has set very high standards and will retain the No. 1 spot for a long time

One goal of this team was to get to the No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings. Now that it has been achieved before the start of the fourth Test, how much does it mean to this young side? Look, when Virat Kohli set out as a Test captain, we sat down after the tour of Australia and discussed about a lot of things. We discussed how this young team wants to play. We set ourselves a few goals. We discussed how we want to play cricket for the next four-five years. We set very high standards for ourselves. We decided to play fearless cricket and be aggressive. You would have seen that in the last year or so that we go out there and have a fearless approach. In the last match, we scored at 4.52 runs per over in the second innings. The boys have stuck to the goals. Individually, we have worked towards getting better. It is a very happy moment for this young side. We're looking forward to the fourth Test and want to wrap this up with one more win.

We saw that brand of cricket against South Africa too when the team looked to attack. Do we expect the same to continue during the long home season? We know we have a lot of Test matches coming up, but the good thing is that we are playing all our Tests at home and know the conditions very well. The teams that are visiting us (New Zealand, England and Australia) are really good and we are looking forward to the challenge. We're looking forward to notch up more wins and add to the tally as we have as a team. We're thoroughly enjoying our success and that's a great thing about this team. The spirits are high and we are really enjoy playing alongside each other and enjoy each other's success. Whatever conditions we are playing in, be it home or away, we enjoy the challenge, enjoy going out and perform for ourselves and the team. The support we got from the fans, from the BCCI has been great and the support staff has always been there to inspire us to give better performances. This is a great phase for Indian cricket and we are going to go higher from here and retain the No. 1 spot for a long time. Captain Virat Kohli mentioned that internal communication the team is very strong. Is that one of the reasons why India are doing so well, with everyone aware of their roles? Absolutely. We're a young unit and the boys want to learn from each other. We want to take the group along and not just improve personally. If you come be a part of this team, you will realize that there is just not one guy working hard throughout the day. If I am going to the gym, I will take 3-4 guys along and even if we are tired, we push each other to work hard. We have been enjoying each day on the field. We play so much cricket, but the attitude we carry on every single day is wonderful to see. Hopefully, we can keep carrying this attitude and perform better and better. You have fought perception that your game was suited for just one format, but have proved yourself in all three formats of the game. Yes, that was the most pleasing thing for me personally to have played all three formats of the game and be consistent. It is something I pushed to get better. I knew I had the skills. It was about how to put up consistent performances game after game and that is what was lacking. I didn't play a lot of Test cricket in the last eight-nine months and that is what I worked on. Now, I want to go out there and perform and enjoy the pressure. Give good starts for my team as that is very important as an opening batsman. I am really happy and I want to keep doing this for my team. Leading up to the fourth Test, both the practice sessions were affected. How do you as a cricketer and the team overall, prepare in such a scenario?

It is important to be mentally strong. We have been playing a lot of cricket, so it does not mean we have had no practice at all. We have been in a good space mentally and have played cricket for 15 or more days, so missing out on a couple of sessions won't matter. It gives you an extra day of break. I think physically we are feeling hungry and we want to go out there and play five days of good, hard cricket.
