England ODI captain is thrilled at wrapping up the series
London, Sept 11: With the fourth ODI of the five-match series having ended in a tie on the Duckworth/ Lewis system, England have won the series with a game to go in Cardiff.
England’s ODI captain Alastair Cook was delighted with his team’s performance that helped clinch the series.
Excerpts from Cook’s post-match media interaction:
On whether he was happy with the tie or rather believed that England should have won the match
It was touch-and-go towards the end. When you are batting with the Duckworth/Lewis [method], you are never really sure when they are going to go off. The partnership between Ravi [Bopara] and Graeme Swann got us really close and [they] got a bit more defensive just knocking ones and twos; [we were] not sure when the rain was going to come. We got ourselves into a great position; the tie is a fair result.
On Ravi Bopara who faced a difficult situation but missed out on a century
Really hard, that. You can’t control [the weather], really; you don’t know when [the rain] is going to come. You [just need to] concentrate on [the] balls coming down. He played an outstanding knock to get us back in the game and it is great to see him delivering on a really big stage to get us to a tie.
On whether England could have done anything differently when they had India down at 110 runs for four wickets
I don’t know. That partnership was fantastic [from] those two [Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni]. We tried everything. [That partnership there] got them to a really competitive total. We bowled really well up to that 40th over; they almost took the game away from us there […]
On whether England missed Jade Dernbach
Possibly. We went for a replacement and Steven Finn bowled very well. Quite lucky to get away for the number of runs that he did.
On Stuart Broad who suffered from an injury while fielding
He has gone for a scan on his tricep. Hopefully he will be back, but we will know in the next 48 hours.
On winning two series back to back as ODI captain
Delighted; they came against two very good sides. To win the two series is fantastic; it is all about winning at the end of the day and no matter how you get there, there are always going to be areas where you can improve. This side had taken its steps, but having that strength and character to get close and get over the line - we have done it in these last few games.
