Vinoo Mankad U-19: QFs, Nov 8
Summary

Punjab, Bengal through to next round

The quarter-finals of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy 2013-14 witnessed two low-scoring games in Ahmedabad on Friday. While the Punjab colts beat Assam U-19 comprehensively, the Bengal lads posted a six-wicket win over Vidarbha U-19 to progress to the next round. Here is the round-up for the day:

Assam U-19 vs Punjab U-19: Opting to bowl first, Punjab U-19 bowled Assam U-19 out for 157 in the 50 overs-a-side match. KS Kaila claimed a five-wicket haul, while the rest of the bowlers chipped in with a wicket each to help wrap up the opposition with a ball remaining. Middle-order batsman W R Rahman was the top-scorer for Assam with 31 runs.

Punjab U-19 opener Prabjot Singh led the chase with an unbeaten 60. He got the team off to a flying start with an 80-run opening stand with Karan Sharma. And after RR Sharma removed Karan for 52, Amolpreet Singh, who replaced the opener, scored 37 not-out to help his team attain the target in 37 overs.

Bengal U-19 vs Vidarbha U-19: Electing to field first in the quarter-final, Bengal U-19 bundled Vidarbha U-19 out for 136 and then chased down the target in 39.5 overs to post a six-wicket win.

The Bengal colts struck at regular intervals and maintained a stranglehold on Vidarbha U-19s. PB Chakraborty, AA Gani and AS Tiwari claimed two wickets each, while RR Roy Chowdhury and AR Keshri picked a wicket apiece to dismantle the Vidarbha U-19 line-up. Bengal U-19’s top-order batsman A R Easwaran then scored an unbeaten half-century to lead his team to victory.
