West Indies’ pacer keen to make a mark against India

Back in the West Indies ODI side after a two-year break, Jerome Taylor is looking forward to the challenge of bowling to the MS Dhoni-led side in India. Having worked his way through injuries, the fast-bowler has made his way back first into the Test side and is now keen to make an impression in the limited overs format on the tour. “This might be a good series for me. If I give a good account of myself against one of the top ranking teams then that would actually boost my confidence and would help my career move forward. When I look at the Indian team and their batting line-up, yes there will be pressure, but you have to spend hours in the field if you want to hit the straps as soon as possible. So we need to be consistent, bowl on one side of the wicket, be patient.” “My mental preparation is up to me. No matter how good a player is you can always nick him off the first ball. It was a very good batting line-up then (with Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid etc) and it is still a good batting line-up now. So it’s about challenging myself and be as consistent as I can and get the ball in the right areas,” he added. Discussing the conditions that await them, Taylor stated, “The challenge is to assess the conditions as quickly as possible and try to stick to the team plan. It’s not a place where you can blast batters out. You have to try and be patient. To win a Test you need to take 20 wickets and if you cannot blast the batsmen out, you have to play the patience game.” Playing under the guidance of former West Indies fast bowler, Curtly Ambrose, who is now the bowling coach, he said, “He imparts his vast knowledge and we try to grasp as much as we can. He plays a vital role. We as fast bowlers look up to him. It’s not about speed or bounce, it’s about consistency to get swing. We are focusing on being consistent as a bowling unit. We all can bowl a heavy ball, but it’s more about being consistent.”
