All-rounder says he’ll keep selectors hooked
Melbourne, Feb 8: The younger of the Hussey brothers, David, is keen to play the ICC World Cup 2015 to be co-hosted by Australia.
"You want to be in the World Cup side, it's probably second to playing Test cricket for Australia," said the all-rounder who will be 37 when the next edition of the marquee event comes around.
"[Playing the 2015 World Cup] is realistic. I want to keep doing well. If you keep doing well you give the selectors a hard task to make that phone call to say you're not in the team. If I keep doing well and contributing to the team's success, you just never know. It's very hard to drop someone from a series win," David was quoted as saying by the Australian media.
Saying that he drew inspiration from his older brother, Michael, who had cemented his place in the side after a lean patch, David said, “We are both stubborn people. When people say you're too old or you've lost your form or you're not good enough to play at the level, you get your back up and want to get out there and prove a lot of people wrong."
Despite delivering consistent performances and being a vital part of the line-up in the shorter version of the game – he even made a quickfire 61 off 30 in the tri-series opener against India – Hussey Jr. is yet to play a Test match for Australia.
Nevertheless, he is positive about his cricketing career even as youngsters keep making their way into the side.
"Hopefully I can contribute to the team’s success and you never know; if your name pops up at the right time you might get that chance to play Test cricket.
"Playing for Australia is the pinnacle and I still harbour hopes of playing Test cricket. If I do well in the one-day arena, you never know, a few doors may open. What keeps you going is that goal of playing for Australia. You dust yourself off and get back out there," David said.
"At the moment I'm really enjoying it, playing every game like it is my last. It's working so far."
