We complement each other: Ojha
Summary

Spinner hopes to keep partnership with Ashwin going

Kolkata, Nov 16: Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha claimed four of the eight West Indies wickets to fall on Day 3 of the Eden Test, helping enforce the follow-on and tightening India’s hold over proceedings. The prolific bowler spoke to the media at the end of day’s play about the game so far and his performance.

Excerpts from the press conference:

On India’s position in the Test match at the end of Day 3

I think right now we are in the driver’s seat and things are going pretty well. Today when we started early there was moisture in the wicket and it was doing a bit for us and we hope the same thing happens tomorrow. The way our guys are bowling is superb. [We’re] hitting the right areas and we are confident that we can get them out [on Day 4] as [early] as possible.

On the lessons learnt playing county cricket

It is about how you handle the pressure because once you are playing county [cricket] [in England], you are professional and you are expected to perform and win games for them; you have a lot of responsibility. It teaches you how to deal with that and overcome [challenges] and do well.

On the difference in bowling between the first and subsequent sessions

It was pretty much the same [way that] we bowled in the morning and the way we did in the second innings. The wicket had become a little better. We are hitting the right areas and we are bowling a disciplined line.

On bowling in tandem with Ravichandran Ashwin

We are complementing each other and I hope we carry on this partnership while bowling and get a lot of wickets for India.

On whether he thinks he has done enough to seal a spot for the Australia tour

As I have said previously, I am not focussing on the Australia tour right now. My aim is to win this Test and I’m looking forward to [the third Test in Mumbai] and god-willing if I do well, then I will think about the other things.

On whether impatience crept in as the side took eight wickets in the first session and very few later

The way things were going in the first innings we got quick wickets and then the wicket became better [to bat on]. As bowlers [we] think, ‘Ok, fine; we have to get one more wicket and then we can run through the side.’ [At the] end of the day, they also batted well and we should give them credit [for]the way they were applying [themselves] in the second innings. I hope we can get them out as soon as possible tomorrow.

On enjoying bowling with the new ball

The wicket was spinning a lot and yesterday the light was bad so we thought of going with spin. It was impossible to make the fast bowlers bowl. I thank [MS] Dhoni bhai [for showing a] lot of confidence in Ashwin and me.

On the wicket

There is quite a bit [of] turn in the wicket right now and hopefully we’ll get more turn [on Day 4] and do well.

On whether Day 4 would be the last day of the match

It is difficult to say. I hope it’s the last day and god-willing we’ll finish off the [series-win] here and then look forward to Bombay.
