Captain feels the side must learn from their mistakes despite the win
Mohali, Oct 20: With a five-wicket win against England in Mohali, India won the ODI series against England 3-0 with two more matches still left to be played. India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni ensured a victory for India with an unbeaten 31-ball 35 cameo after a few hiccups in the middle.
Despite the comprehensive series win, the India captain said that the team still has areas that they can improve on and would be looking to do so in the forthcoming games. Dhoni insisted the team would not rest on their laurels.
Excerpts from the post-match media interview:
On successfully chasing a stiff target
It was very good performance. [Although] the middle-order didn’t bat so well, the upper middle-order did the job for us. The openers batted really well. The bowling was good but we gave away too many boundary opportunities to the opposition. It really matters if you bowl around 40 to 45 percent dot balls and if you don’t give too many boundaries the opposition won’t score close to 300 odd runs. We need to improve. That’s one thing, if you win games everything gets covered, but it’s important that we realize what mistakes we have [been] making in [a] particular game and hopefully we will improve.
On the pitch
Again dew was a factor. If you see, there was decent amount of dew on the field which meant that the It ball started to come on nicely to the bat. You could rotate [the strike] a bit freely without taking much chances. The way [Ajinkya] Rahane batted along with Gautam Gambhir in the middle after the start, I think was very crucial. We lost wickets at the wrong time [and] after that we had to get some kind of partnership going which we didn’t. So, these are the areas where we will work on in the coming two games.
On the sweet taste of success after the England tour
It is important to be consistent. As I said, it’s not like we went down without doing anything, especially in the ODIs in England. The youngsters did a very good job. It was the bowling department that struggled a bit, but over here we are bowling also well and we are backing ourselves to chase whatever the opposition scores. We have been able to do that, so the appreciation should go to the batsmen also.
