Harbhajan says India will not take anything for granted even though they are ahead in the series
Dominica, July 6: Indian spin ace Harabhajan Singh has said India will not take the West Indies for granted heading into the final Test of the three match series at Dominica. Speaking to the official broadcast channel before the start of the Test, Harbhajan, currently with 398 Test wickets to his credit, also reflected on his 13-year career in international cricket.
Excerpts from the conversation:
On the series:
We are quite happy at the moment. We are one up in the series but we definitely don’t want to take things for granted. It’s a funny game. Anything can happen. We respect the opposition. They have some quality players in their side. Looking forward to the third Test with a positive nod and hopefully, we’ll play to our potential and win this Test as well.
On his own form:
Well, it’s just been on and off. I’ve bowled well but I haven’t got as many wickets as I’ve expected of myself. But there is still a lot of cricket to be played in this series. I’m hoping one of the big performances will come in the third Test match.
On having played 13 years of international cricket:
Well, the journey has been great. Never thought I’ll play for this long. God has been really kind to give me this kind of a chance, an opportunity to play well for India for such a long period of time. And, obviously, my seniors Sachin [Tendulkar], Rahul [Dravid], Anil bhai, VVS Laxman have always been there for me. It’s just great to be a part of this setup. We are the number one side in the Test rankings and, obviously, I’m really happy whatever role I’ve played to make this team number one, I’ll try my best to keep on doing what I’ve been doing so that this team remains at number one.
On the variations he has been working on so that he does not become predictable:
You have to make sure that your consistency to hit the spot should be higher than anyone else. If you hit the spot consistently, you will get wickets. Batsmen are going to play their shots. Batsmen have been getting out in the same way that they were getting out since cricket started. So, there’s no point in trying different things which will unnecessarily create drama for yourself. I know what I’m good at and I would just like to stick to what I’ve been doing, what made me successful. I’m sure, If I do so, I’ve survived for 13 years why not another ten.
