Indian captain promises ruthlessness in Delhi Test despite having the series in the bag
When he leads Team India for the fourth Test of the series against South Africa in Delhi, it will be a special moment for Virat Kohli. At the ground where he began his life as a cricketer, he will return to as India’s Test captain. “It is a matter of privilege for me to be playing my first match at my home ground as India’s Test captain,” Virat said ahead of the Test. “This is where I started my career; I made my Ranji Trophy debut here too. There are many special memories attached to this ground for me. “This is a ground where everything fell in place for me. The first time I was selected was because of a trial match that I played here. So, this is the ground that literally started my career. I have scored a lot of runs on this ground, in the Ranji Trophy, ODIs and the IPL. I really like playing here and I like the feel of the ground,” Virat said. To add to the joy of the monumental occasion for India’s young captain, his team will take field at the Feroz Shah Kotla with the series already in the pocket. However, for Virat, it will only be about converting the 2-0 scoreline to 3-0. And hence, there will be no experimentation with the playing XI. “Changes in the team depend on the conditions and not on whether we have won or lost the series. Talking about the team’s mindset, we want to be ruthless. We are not satisfied with winning the series 2-0. If we have a chance, we want to make it 3-0. And the changes will be made keeping that in mind. It’s not like since we have won the series, let’s give someone else a chance. The phase that this team is in right now, there is no room for such experiments. When we create that winning habit, that’s when we can do these experiments,” he said. Virat spoke passionately about his team and the culture he wants to build within. “As a team we are not looking to be at a certain stage in two or six months. The whole idea is to create an environment where people want to work hard and give their 110 per cent to ensure that the team wins Test matches. That is the kind of habit we want to create, whether we play in India or abroad. “The basic idea is to create that winning culture in the team where everyone is honest and willing to put in the effort day in and day out, in every practice session. This is a young team and we are all building our careers together. This can be a very wonderful phase for the team and that is what we want to achieve. “We don’t play for rankings, averages or numbers. Winning is the ultimate thing. People will talk about your numbers for a while but in the end it all boils down to how many times you have been a part of a winning team. In a match where only two-three people have performed, what about the other eight? Their enjoyment is when the team wins. When the entire squad gets together in the evening and talks about the game, that is the joy for all the people in the team. It is about being selfless and achieving that happy feeling for the team,” Virat said. This series win extends the brilliant start to Virat’s Test captaincy, after the landmark victory in Sri Lanka. And he is as proud of his boys as he should be. “I think it was good Test cricket. Everyone enjoyed watching the matches and people want to see exciting cricket and results. We have enjoyed playing in this series and putting pressure on the opposition. In Sri Lanka, we achieved something that wasn’t done in the last 23 years and now we have beaten a team that hadn’t lost for nine years. So, we can pat ourselves on the back for these consecutive historic wins and it is definitely something that will give the team a lot of confidence.”
