Indian captain leaves the ODI victory behind, focuses on the challenges of T20 format
Ajinkya Rahane had a perfect start to his new role as India’s captain with a 3-0 ODI series win against Zimbabwe. Now his captaincy will be tested in the shortest format, as the two teams gear up for the two T20Is at the Harare Sports Club. “I am enjoying this new challenge and leading this good bunch of guys,” Rahane said ahead of the first T20I, on Friday. “I was very pleased with the fact that different players put their hand up in the three ODIs and that gives a lot of assurance to the captain.” While the skipper is happy with the show his team put in the 50-over matches, he is not letting the victory sway his focus from the job at hand. “We did pretty well in the ODIs but every format has different challenges. We will have to start from the scratch in the T20Is because we know that a couple of good overs for either team can change the complexion of the game,” he said. “We have to be on our toes and play good cricket throughout the 40 overs. And I am sure the boys are up for it.” Rahane’s luck with the toss in the ODIs deserted him as India had to bat on the fresh morning wicket in all three games. In the T20Is the toss will not be so crucial as the matches will begin under the afternoon sun. Rahane is confident his players will adjust to the change in conditions and the format using their IPL experience. “ODIs started at 9 in the morning and the T20I are in the afternoon. So, the wicket will be slightly better to bat on but still on the slower side,” he said. “We have to adjust very quickly in this format and the guys are experienced enough in the T20s with all the IPL exposure back home. I am sure they will come good. “We have more T20 experience in this group and that will help. But again, you have to perform on the particular day and have the right attitude throughout the game. We have to play as a unit, like we did in the ODIs.”
