Pujara’s 67 gives India A fighting chance
Mumbai, June 11: The India A batsmen failed to take advantage on day 2 of the second Test against West Indies A in Kingstown, St Vincent. After dismissing the hosts for 217, the Indian batting line-up capitulated for 202 with only Cheteshwar Pujara providing some resistance with 67.
Day 2 began on a positive note for the visitors with Shami Ahmed quickly wrapping up the Windies innings. Top scorer Kraigg Brathwaite couldn’t add to his overnight score of 66 after Ahmed bowled the right-hander out. Last man Devendra Bishoo had little chance as Ahmed got his fourth wicket of the innings; trapping Bishoo lbw, for the Windies to finish on 217.
Abhinav Mukund and Shikhar Dhawan opened the innings for the Indians. Pacer Delorn Johnson struck in the first over after Dhawan (0) inside edged one onto his stumps. Mukund (8) was the next to depart as Jason Holder trapped the Indian left-hander in front of the wickets. India A were struggling to get their innings going with two wickets down and just 12 runs on the board. Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara steadied the ship with some effective risk-free batting to remain unbeaten with the team total on 64 for 2 at Lunch.
Pujara reached his fifty with a six off Bishoo to put the pressure back on the hosts. But the Windies replied quickly with skipper Veerasammy Permaul dismissing Rahane (18). Soon, the Indians were tottering at 88 for 4; Rohit Sharma (1) couldn’t keep the ball on the ground as Permaul took a brilliant return catch. It was the Windies skipper once again who got the crucial breakthrough of Pujara, who top-edged one to the keeper to leave India on 115 for 5. Manoj Tiwary (23) made matters worse after playing across the line to be adjudged lbw off Johnson. Wriddhiman Saha and Rahul Sharma stitched together a 38-run partnership for the seventh wicket. But the Windies saw to it that it didn’t escalate after Bishoo dismissed Saha (20). 161 for 7 and in stepped Shami Ahmed to give company to Rahul Sharma. The duo batted well to add 32 runs to the total before Permaul struck again to dismiss Sharma (30). The Indian total crawled over the 200-run mark, but couldn’t go much farther as the Windies wrapped up the tail. India A were dismissed for 202. With a lead of 15 runs, the hosts saw out the day with ease and ended day 2 on 6 for no loss to set up an exciting third day.
