Young Bista slams maiden first-class ton
Summary

Rest of India struggle on the first day after Mumbai batters dig deep

Propelled by Jay Bista’s 90-ball 104, Mumbai posted 386 for three on Day 1 after Aditya Tare elected to bat against Rest of India XI in the Irani Cup match at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai. On his return to the senior side for the game, the youngster set the tone with his maiden first-class century in a 193-run opening stand with Akhil Herwadkar (90). Building on their efforts, Shreyas Iyer scored a half-century while Suryakumar Yadav was batting on 88 with the captain as Mumbai look to set the opposition a stiff target. Although edges flew and some dropped short of the fielders early in the innings, the opening pair steadily got in the groove as they helped lay the foundation for a formidable total. Bista, who is riding on the confidence of a solid double-century in the Under-23 CK Nayudu final, took on the Jaydev Unadkat-led attack. The pair saw off the first session with an unbroken partnership as they took Mumbai to Lunch at 159 without loss. After going neck-and-neck as they brought up the fifty for the team, Bista went past his partner as he upped the ante. The 20-year-old was the first to reach the half-century mark with a boundary off Jayant Yadav down the leg-side while Herwadkar too followed him to the mark a while later. Scoring at a quick pace while displaying a wide array of shots, Bista plundered runs off the ROI attack. After leading the charge in the first session, Bista came down the track to off-spinner Jayant and smashed him into the sight screen for a six early in the second session. And in the following over, he reached the three–figure mark with three off Das through the cover region. His sparkling innings however came to an end when he was trapped lbw by the pacer. Iyer, who replaced him in the middle, got off the mark with a firmly hit boundary off Das and followed it up with another through long leg. In the following over, ROI would have seen the back of Herwadkar too had Sheldon Jackson held on to the ball after the opener edged Anikt Rajpoot to the slips. However, the lapse only cost them a couple of runs as the bowler forced an edge from the batsman in his next and was caught at first slip by Faiz Fazal. While Suryakumar joined Iyer in the run making, Rajpoot left the field with a strain, but returned later in the last session. Looking to build on the platform set by the openers, the pair kept the score board ticking at a quick pace. The partnership blossomed as the No. 3 bat reached yet another first-class fifty. However, the blossoming partnership ended just before Tea with Iyer hitting Binny to backward point. After Mumbai dominated the first session, the second was more even with ROI claiming three wickets for 115 runs. However, the experienced bats – Suryakumar Yadav and Tare then seized the momentum back in Mumbai’s favour in the last session. They kept the scoreboard moving while batting at an unhurried pace. Suryakumar impressed with some crisp boundaries, slamming some straight down the ground. He swept Jayant over deep mid-wicket to get to his half-century and followed it up with a couple more in the next over off Rajpoot. In the last over of the day, he slammed three successive fours off the spinner. He lofted one over mid-off and swept the next two as he took the team to Stumps in an unbroken 114-run partnership with Tare (38*). Brief scores: Mumbai 1st inn 386/3 in 83 overs (J Bista 104, A Herwadkar 90, SK Yadav 88*, S Binny 1/35)
